Missouri River (ND Lower Portion) - Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Made it out on the water this afternoon and got to enjoy the beautiful day.  Fishing was pretty good with a nice limit of fish caught using both jigs tipped with minnows and crankbaits.  The fish are really scattered right now and don't seem to be relating to any certain depth.  Caught one fish in 2 feet of water and one in about 10 feet of water and any where in between.  I expect the fishing to really pick up in the next few days with the nice weather we are having and the spawn getting over.  Hope everyone gets a chance to get out and enjoy what's left of spring.

I think we can finally say the open water season is here to stay and Lake Oahe Guides is ready to start up another season.  Made it out on the Missouri River south of Bismarck again today, and despite the major snow storm this past weekend and the below average temperatures we've been having the fish cooperated way better than I anticipated.  We caught some solid walleyes today pitching jigs tipped with minnows on to the sand bars.  Up until now the bite has been kind of hit and miss and this seems to be the most consistent it has been and should only get better with time as the spawn approaches and the water temps rise in the coming weeks.  If we can get the weather to cooperate we should have another ecxellent spring here on the Missouri River.

Check out the picture gallery for some of the recent action on the River.

Fishing remains pretty consistent on the Big Lake with a good number of fish in the 20 to 23 inch range.  Of course there are still lots of small ones mixed in so a person can stay plenty busy.  We are still getting our fish on lindy's and spinners mostly tipped with a nightcrawler.  Depth really depends on the day whether the wind is blowing or not and also if the sun is shining.  We have caught them in shallow as 10 feet and as deep as 30+ just depends on the weather conditions.

The river has been slow still for the most part but I would sure think it should start to pick up soon, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.  Look for reports in the near future.

We have still been on a pretty consistent walleye bite on the Big Lake, with lots of fish in the 14 to 16 inch range with a good number each day between 18 to 20 inches with an occasional 22 to 23 incher.   But still lots of action each day with all the different species of fish including some pretty big northern pike, which makes for a fun day.  We are catching most of our fish on lindy's or spinners in 20 to 30 feet of water on mostly main lake points and the bait of choice is still the nightcrawler.  I have heard some guys doing good on cranks but haven't done much crankin myself.  I don't see any reason for the bite to slow anytime soon so if you get a chance get out and enjoy this wonderful fishery while the weather holds.

Saturday was one of the toughest bites I have seen this year and had us wondering if the bite was done for the year or if it was just the cold front.  After being on the water Sunday I would definately have to say it was the cold front.  Sunday we had two boats on the Big Lake working different sections of the lake and both did very well with numerous fish over the 20 inch mark.  Still lots of bass and a few Northern Pike mixed in which makes for an exciting and busy time.  Most of our fish have been coming on spinners with nightcrawlers.  The weather plays a big part of how well the fish want to cooperate this time of year.  If the weather is consistent for a few days in a row the walleyes seem to be pretty aggressive.

Catching lots of fish on the Big Lake right now with lots of 13 to 15 inch walleyes and about 3 to 6 really good ones a day, and by really good ones I am talking 21 to 23 inchers.  Most of our fish the last few days have been coming in the middle portion of the lake around the Douglas and Hazen Bay areas.  We have mostly been using live bait rigs such as lindy's and spinners in 10 to about 25 feet.  Start in the shallower water in the morning and as the day goes on slide out a little deeper into that 20 plus foot depth.  We have not experimented with cranks yet because we haven't needed to but I would think they would work well.

Lake Sakakawea is still the place to be, and it doesn't seem to matter where you go, I have heard good reports from all over the Big Lake.  We have been working the middle portion of the lake  around the Douglas Bay area pulling spinners and livebait rigs in 10 to 20 feet of water.  Have been catching quite a few walleyes in the 20+ inch range with lots of smaller ones and plenty of smallmouth bass.  Sure is fun on the water right now with all the action but make sure you bring plenty of bait.

Should be some great weights this weekend in the Dakota Walleye classic tournament held at Beulah Bay.  Good luck to all the tournament anglers this weekend!

We had a great week on the water but one thing is for sure, the fishing is definately better with a little wind on the Big Lake.  Had boats out pretty much all week with very good success, but it was definately better during the week, I think partly because there was a little more wind to stir things up a bit and partly because of less boat traffic during the week.  However despite the calm winds this weekend we still caught good batches of fish both Saturday and Sunday we just had to work a little harder and move a little more until we found active fish.

We worked the lake over pretty hard in the last week fishing it from the 83 embankment all the way over to Beaver and I cant say one part is better than the other.  We did pretty well in each area, just depends what area a person prefers.  We also experimented with some different presentations.  Of course we did use lindy's but also caught fish with spinners, crankibaits, and jigs.  One thing that remains consistent is the depth these fish are coming in, most  fish are still in that 10 to 15 foot range, especially if there is a mudline.

It is amazing to me all the different species getting caught in this lake right now, on Saturday we caught 9 different species of fish.  The smallmouth fishing is amazing right now with 20 to 30 a day and that isn't even fishing for them.  There is also some real nice Northern Pike getting caught up to about 10 lbs.

It doesn't seem as if this lake is going to slow down anytime soon so get out and enjoy this great fishery!

Had some pretty decent days on the Big Lake this past week with a boat out on Friday fishing the douglas bay area and managed some good sized fish.  Most fish came in that 10 15 foot range with spinners and lindy's tipped with a night crawler.

Saturday had a great group of guys out on the East end near the 83 embankment.  We were fishing some underwater humps and points with mostly lindy's tipped with nightcrawlers, however a couple fish came on leeches.  Most fish we caught came in that same 10 to 15 foot range.  Fishing was still pretty decent despite the calm winds.

Finally, on Sunday with all the boat traffic on the east end we decided to head west toward the beaver bay area.  First spot we stopped in we caught a good one within about 5 minutes and we thought this should be an easy day.  Boy were we wrong, we didn't boat another fish for about two hours and then we figured out a pattern and we turned a not so good day into a pretty good one.  We started finding fish relating more to the points with more rock on them and we just kept moving around and trying different points, giving each one a half hour or so and if nothing we would move on until we found some active fish.  I think the key at least the last few days is to stay mobile, don't be afraid to move around.

Still a good bite going on Lake Sakakawea and look for the fishing to get even better in the days and weeks to come.

We had a great few days on the water.  It started with Sakakawea on thursday we had two boats working the east end of the big lake.  We did very well with bottom bouncers and crawlers fishing 10 to 15 feet of water.  Seems to be a lot fish around this area and they are very aggressive, if you can find them on the graff they will bite.  Also had a couple boats working the same areas this weekend and same story, it seems you just need to move around and fish points and underwater islands with livebait and you will find fish.  Not sure about the crankbait bite because to be honest we haven't tried yet.

Also, this weekend I was down at the stateline area fishing from the Cattail bay area all the way south to the ND/SD stateline and to my surprise did very well.  The biggest fish was 24 inches and had a few in the 18 to 20 inch range.  Also caught a lot of little ones with a variety of species caught.  We caught walleye, northern pike, perch, drum, white bass and also crappie so make sure you bring plenty of bait.    We fished in about 8 to 15 feet with livebait rigs.  The hard part now is to decide whether a person should go north or south?

Saturday we had a great morning on the water south of Bismarck catching a 3 man limit in a couple hours.  Went through a ton of fish ranging from 12 inches all the way up to about 22 inches, so there is a huge variety of sizes around right now.  Most of our fish came on crawlers with lindy's in 10 to 15 feet of water, but we did manage a few on minnows.  Also had a boat in the Hazelton area that did pretty good pulling crankbaits as well.  There still seems to be a good number of fish still around in the river so get out and enjoy it while it lasts.

Interesting week on the water with boats covering a lot of water.  Friday had a boat south of Bismarck trolling Cranks and picking up some nice walleyes in 12 to 15 feet of water.  Had numerous fish in the 18 to 22 inch range.
Also had a boat further south into Lake Oahe that also did pretty well catching a 2 man limit of Walleyes mainly pulling crankbaits.  The little ones have seemed to invade the system getting caught from the state line all the way north to the dam, so there is plenty of action.  A person just needs to be patient and fish through the little ones to get to the bigger fish, but they are there.
Also had a boat right in Bismarck all weekend with limits coming pretty easy both Saturday and Sunday.  Most fish came on livebait rigs with a crawler, however we did catch a few on a jig and a minnow.  All fish came in 10 foot or more of water, once again just be patient with all the little ones.  I think we can expect the bite on the River to slow a bit in the near future and it should pick up down on Lake Oahe as these fish slide a little further south.
Also had a boat up on Sakakawea this weekend that had good success with jigs and livebait rigs!  Fish ranged from 18 to 23 inches and are as fat and healthy as they possibly can be.  Look for this walleye bite to heat up as the water temps get a little warmer.

Check out the photo gallery for some of the action from the last few days.

Lake Oahe Guides will be concentrating our efforts more south of Bismarck on Lake Oahe and also on Lake Sakakawea so if you are interested in fishing these bodies of water check out lakeoaheguides.com and give Brian a call.

Fished the Missouri River close to Bismarck again today and managed a 3 man limit pretty quick once we found the fish.  Caught most fish on live bait rigs in 8-13 feet of water.  There still seems to be a lot of fish in the system right now and not sure why they are still here but I am glad they are.  Check out the photo gallery for some of todays action.

Had a boat on the water today with good success on live bait rigs fishing in depths from 8 to 15 feet.  Caught fish varying in size from 13 inches to about 22 inches.  Again lots of action and it seems that live bait rigs are the best way to go right now.  We will be on the water a lot in the next few weeks so look for more reports to come.

Still some very nice fish around Bismarck, in fact I would say it is getting better.  Caught our limit of 10 pretty fast using jigs and minnows or plastics.  All fish were over 18 inches and 6 were over 20 inches and the little ones will keep you  plenty busy.  Make sure to have plenty of bait with as it seems you catch about 5 small ones to every keeper.

Check out the photo gallery for some of the nicer fish we caught.
